Easy-to-grow annual flowers are ideal for people who have recently owned their garden and are just learning how to grow it.

How to plan a garden to be easy to grow?

Having your own nice garden is a very time-consuming activity. Unfortunately less and less people have enough time to take care of it. Having little time does not mean that you cannot have a beautiful garden. You just have to plan it properly. When planning a low-maintenance garden two things are very important:

  • establishment:
    • the soil reaction,
    • sunlight,
    • weather conditions;
  • choosing the right plants.

Easy-to-grow annual flowers

Most annual flowers are easy-to-grow plants that are sown in early spring and bloom in summer and late fall. If the seeds from flowering plants are not collected, they very often overwinter in the ground and flower again in the summer.

Annual flowers can be sown:

  • in pots,
  • in boxes,
  • in the ground.

Most annuals prefer sunny positions. These flowers also need to be fertilized and watered intensively.

1. Double feathered cosmos

Cosmos is an annual plant that can reach up to 1 m in height. The ornament of this plant is the large flowers in colors ranging from white to light pink. This flower blooms from July until late fall.

This plant is very easy to grow, it just needs a sunny position. Seeds are sown straight into the ground right after cold gardeners, which is after May 14.

2. Marigold

Marigold is an ornamental medicinal plant. It grows to a maximum height of 70 cm. It blooms orange from June to October.

This plant should be sown into the ground in late April and early May. It needs a sunny location and intensive watering during dry weather. The inflorescence should be cut off in order to prolong the flowering period.

3. Nasturtium

Nasturtium is grown in Poland in two varieties:

  • climbing – it looks great on trellises,
  • it is also suitable for planting in containers or growing on flowerbeds.

The flowers of nasturtiums range from yellow to red and bloom throughout the summer. This plant requires a sunny position with slightly moist soil, low in mineral components.

4. Macaw

This is an annual flower with a beautiful scent. It grows very fast, up to about 40 cm high, with light purple flowers.

It blooms from June to August. It needs a sunny position, but it can also grow in partial shade. It requires regular watering during dry weather.

5. Ornamental sunflower

The ornamental sunflower is a dwarf variety of the popular sunflower. This variety comes in colors:

  • yellow,
  • red,
  • brown,
  • purple.

The April period is in July and August. The seeds should be sown into the ground in the middle of May. This plant requires a sunny position sheltered from the wind. Sunflower needs to be watered and fertilized regularly.

6. Clary sage

Glossy sage is one of the prettiest annual plants that is suitable for growing in beds. It blooms from June to September and grows up to 40 cm high.

It requires a sunny position and fertile humus soil. The cuttings can be put into the ground in the middle of May.

7. Chinese aster

Chinese aster is one of the most popular flowers in Polish gardens. It blooms in August and September. The plant is suitable for growing:

  • in crates,
  • pots,
  • the plant is suitable for growing in boxes, pots and on flowerbeds.

Asters prefer a sunny position with humus and sandy soil. The seeds are sown into the ground in the middle of May.

8. California calla lily

California Meadowwort is valued for its long flowering period (from June to September), this plant grows up to 60 cm high.

It requires a sunny location with permeable soil. The seeds can be sown already in April. It doesn’t need to be fertilized

9. Pansies

Garden flowers are grown especially by people, who arrange dried bouquets. It grows up to 100 cm high and blooms from July to October.

The plant requires a sunny position and humus permeable soil. The seeds are sown into containers at the end of March and the beginning of April and are transplanted into the soil at the end of May.

10. Tagetes

This plant is very popular in polish gardens. It grows up to a maximum height of 80 cm, although the most popular is spreading velvet growing up to 30 cm.

Velvet requires a sunny position, before sowing the ground should be fertilized with a multi-ingredient fertilizer.

11. Lapwort

This plant blooms from May to October, it has delicate flowers in colors:

  • white,
  • blue,
  • pink,
  • purple.

It requires a sunny position with moist and slightly permeable soil.

12. Damask cumin

The damask is a flower with a hairy stem and an inflorescence in colors:

  • white,
  • light blue,
  • pink,
  • blue-violet.

This plant has no special cultivation requirements, but it should be fertilized regularly with a compound fertilizer.
