A well-tended, green lawn around the house is a dream for people who love greenery and relaxing outdoors. We tell you how to create a lawn step by step.
The stage of creating a lawn is practically the last one after constructing the architectural elements, laying the pavement, installing the wiring and planting the plants. When planting grass, there are a few simple rules to follow so that the plants will emerge and grow lushly. In the guide below, you will find instructions on when and how to plant your own lawn and what not to do in order not to destroy the fruits of your labor.
The first step to establishing your own lawn is to properly prepare the area where the grass will be planted. This task should be approached very meticulously, because the appearance of the lawn for years to come depends on the quality of our work. Planting the lawn is the final stage in a new garden. The construction work has to be finished first because no lawn can survive on a construction site. The paving and installation that is dug into the ground also needs to be marked out and laid. Plants also need to be planted and flowerbeds demarcated before the lawn can be established. How do I prepare the ground on which the lawn will be placed?
First of all, you need to clear the ground from large stones, debris, construction debris and trash. Pull weeds out of the ground, clean up any lingering leaves and remove roots. Skipping this step can prevent the grass from growing properly. Not taking care of the base can also result in the lawn looking unsightly.
This is not an essential device that should be in every garden, but an underground irrigation system is certainly a big help in taking care of the lawn. At this stage we must also delineate the electrical installations that are to run through our garden, powering, among other things, the lighting. All cables, pipes and drains have to be dug into the ground before the grass is planted
Digging up the soil on which the lawn will be placed is very important. The soil does not have to be broken very deeply; digging it to the depth of a spade is enough. When digging up the garden it is a good idea to add natural compost to the soil so that it penetrates the soil better. If the garden area is large and it is difficult to dig up the entire area with a spade, you can use a soil tiller. This gardening tool loosens and mixes the soil very well. You can easily rent one from a company that has mowers, trimmers, and other garden equipment.
A lawn grows best in well-drained soil consisting of sand and clay. Make sure that the soil is not too sandy or too clayey. The best pH, or acidity level of the soil, is between 5.5 and 7.0. If the pH is significantly lower, horticultural lime should be added to the surface.
Standard gardening tools, such as a spade and a rake, are good for levelling. The surface on which the grass will grow should be fairly uniform – you should level the area to get rid of holes and hills. This will ensure that the lawn is evenly watered and avoid future mowing difficulties. After levelling, an important activity is to compact the surface – walking and tamping, or mechanically with a special roller.
The only thing missing from such a prepared surface is grass seed. A suitable seed mix can be bought easily from garden stores and DIY stores. You should find out which type of grass is ideal for the conditions in your garden before buying it. You will need between 2.5 and 3.5 kg of grass seed for a 100 m2 lawn. You can sow the seeds by hand or with a seed drill. The grass usually starts to germinate about two weeks after sowing
An easier and less labor-intensive way to get a beautiful and well-kept lawn is to use ready-made grass rolls. They are ideal for gardens with lots of sunlight. If you decide to create a lawn from a roll, you don’t have to wait for the effect, because you immediately have a beautiful, green and well-kept green belt.
