Biological wastewater treatment plant. How does it work?

It takes approx. 5 minutes to read this article

The current times prompt many of us to take action to protect the environment. This attitude, in addition to the global dimension, increasingly begins to apply to our immediate environment. If you own a house and want to do something for the environment, learn about modern biological wastewater treatment plant.

What is biological wastewater treatment plant and how it works

Biological wastewater treatment plant is based on modern technology of wastewater aeration. What does this mean? Wastewater aeration allows oxygenation of the environment, which is located in the bioreactor. The whole philosophy of biological wastewater treatment plant operation is aimed at elimination of unpleasant smells, which occur in case of using traditional septic tank. The most important factor in the operation of such wastewater treatment plant is the formation of so-called active sludge, i.e. a living suspension of aerobic bacteria. Microorganisms in such suspension have the ability to oxidize organic compounds. What is more, biological treatment plant converts sewage into water, which can be reintroduced into the environment (e.g. into the river or ditch by the house). This is a very ecological solution, which is already obligatory in other countries. If there is no river near your house, you can also successfully use a biological treatment plant – wastewater that has already been treated can be discharged back into the ground. A specially designed infiltration facility is used for this purpose – it can take the form of an absorption well, drain or infiltration box. The treated wastewater can be reused for garden irrigation

In the simplest terms, the operation of biological wastewater treatment plant is based on the biological processes taking place inside the plant, which decompose the wastewater into harmless compounds.

If you want to be eco-friendly, bet on biological wastewater treatment plant

The solution offered by biological wastewater treatment plant has all advantages. It works in harmony with nature, the whole process takes place in specially designed containers and devices installed underground in your backyard garden. The technology used in such wastewater treatment plants allows for biological neutralization of bacteria, and thus the unpleasant smell that we have when using a traditional septic tank. It should be mentioned that not all biological treatment plants are odorless. It is therefore necessary to carefully study the offer available on the market to choose a system that in addition to ecological solution to the operation will provide us with the absence of unpleasant odors. This category includes, for example, biological wastewater treatment plants VH (their manufacturer is, for example, the company Eko House). The range of products includes two types of treatment plants, which differ in the number of chambers and aeration zones.

Is biological wastewater treatment plant for everyone – why to invest in this solution?

The answer to this question seems obvious. Yes, after all every owner of a house and garden wants to use natural methods and modern solutions, which in many cases also reduce the cost of using the house itself. If you have a classic septic tank, you know very well that the costs of its operation are high – emptying a septic tank is an expense of several thousand per year. Biological wastewater treatment plant is an annual cost of several hundred PLN. Therefore, reduction of waste water disposal costs is the main parameter supporting this modern solution.

Get rid of unpleasant smells

The main advantage of biological wastewater treatment plant is the absence of unpleasant odour. Even ecological treatment plants or ecological septic tanks are not able to eliminate odours completely. Biological wastewater treatment plants cope with it perfectly. Activated sludge makes all processes that take place in wastewater odorless. Aeration of wastewater supports the growth of this sludge and blocks the development of septic processes, and thus the formation of odour

Why use a biological treatment plant?

Biological treatment plant:

  • reduces unpleasant odors;
  • allows reuse of treated wastewater (so-called technical water) for e.g. garden irrigation;
  • reduces costs of wastewater treatment;
  • makes the household independent from the sewerage system;
  • involves simple installation; the assembly does not take up much space, the treatment plant is easy to operate and does not incur operating costs – it will not require re-draining after a certain period of use, for example;
  • has the form of one large tank divided into several chambers;
  • no need to use additional biopreparations; the treatment plant is self-sufficient – aeration of wastewater eliminates rotting and bad-smelling processes;
  • can be subsidized – up to 80% of the total investment price, if the municipality where we live has funds earmarked for subsidizing such solutions;
  • most often has a 10-year warranty

What to look for when buying a biological wastewater treatment plant?

The basic parameter to consider is the number of users living in the household. A traditional family of four uses on average 500-550 liters of water per day, which gives us 0.55m3 per day of water consumption. The current construction law indicates that a building permit is not required to build a household biological sewage treatment plant with a capacity of up to 7,5m3 per day. It is only necessary to obtain the appropriate permit from the supervising authority.
