Drainage in front of the garage – how to get rid of rainwater?

It takes approx. 4 minutes to read this article

Many building plots have the same problem – after building up the surface with paving stones or other material, rainwater has nowhere to soak in and starts to collect in the lowest point. Unfortunately, such a point is often located near the garage. However, there are ways to effectively drain the plot.

How to make linear drainage in front of the garage?

A very good way to drain the plot is to make linear drainage. It allows to direct water to sewage system or to a container for rainwater. The drainage can be laid shallow, which will make it possible to avoid very costly ground works

The whole undertaking consists in placing a gutter in a small depression, which is covered from the top with a grate. It is made of stainless steel, which greatly strengthens its construction and makes it resistant to moisture. The entire length of the gutter collects rainwater which flows into the rainwater drain. Water can be directed from under our garage to the absorption well or to the ground. If we decide to drain rainwater to the ground, it is important that it is made at a considerable distance from the building so that rainwater does not seep too much into the foundations. Thanks to the grate, leaves and other larger debris are retained and water can flow away freely. Drainage troughs can be connected to form a system that also drains the terrace, roof and area around the building. You can create strings of gutters that lay from the driveway to the garage all the way to the front door

Where will we need plot drainage?

Plot drainage is necessary in places where the surface is paved. This includes the terrace as well as the driveway to the garage. It is very important to place linear drainage along the garage door, especially if the entrance to our garage is below the ground surface. You can also place drainage at the entrance to the building and also on the terrace if it is also located below the ground surface. Often a lot of rainwater collects under the terrace door, so it is a good place to place gutters. Land drainage is necessary when a large part of the area around the house is paved. This is mainly about the paths in the garden and the paving around the house. The more built-up the area, the more drainage troughs must be placed. Importantly, you can also install a drainage system at the dumpster and along the entrance gate to the property.

How is rainwater treated according to the law?

Getting rid of rainwater from our plot, it should be remembered that all wastewater, including rainwater, is by law an element of water management, so its discharge must be in accordance with the provisions of water law. If our plot is located in an area where there is a sewerage system, the drained water, including rainwater, must be directed to the so-called combined sewerage system or rainwater drainage system. If we want to use the public sewerage system, we have to report it to the starosty. In case the drainage system is made for us by an external company, the starosty may ask us to show the plot drainage plans. We can also collect rainwater in retention tanks. This is a good way to save water because we can filter it later and use it for household purposes, such as watering the flowers or washing the driveway. Rainwater can also be found in absorption wells or be distributed around the plot, using the so-called infiltration drainage. Rainwater is often stored in surface or underground tanks. If you have a pond, rainwater can also be used to fill it.
