A green beautiful, thick lawn is the dream of many garden owners. But for a lawn to look beautiful, it needs to be properly cared for and maintained. What are the most common mistakes when laying a lawn? How do I have to lay a lawn properly?
There is a lot of work to do in the garden in summer and autumn, so you should not lay a lawn while other garden work is being done. Then often the lawn is established regardless of the weather. Which is a big mistake. When there is excessive rainfall, the seeds may rot. In hot weather, the seeds may not emerge or may die. If the lawn is established too late, the grass may not come up before winter and the seeds will freeze.
If the ground is prepared improperly, the quality of the grass will be very poor in subsequent years. The soil should be cleaned, leveled, scarified and fertilized before establishing a lawn.
Often, one species of grass is sown in the entire garden. It is important to know that grass has different preferences depending on the species. You should sow sports or all-purpose grass in heavily used areas.
If you don’t sow the seed evenly or cover it properly, you’ll end up with bare patches on the lawn or overcrowding. The problem with imprecise seeding usually occurs when the grass is seeded by hand. To prevent imprecise seeding, sow the grass twice in a cross pattern. The seed should then be covered with new subsoil 0.5 to 1 cm thick.
If you don’t use the right equipment, the turf settles unevenly and causes depressions in the lawn, which spoil its aesthetics and make it difficult to mow. Instead of rolling, you can compact the soil with boards attached to shoes.
Before establishing a lawn, you need to properly prepare the land. The establishment of the lawn should be the last element of the garden arrangement. The soil on which you want to sow grass needs to be thoroughly cleaned of stones and debris from the previous sod. Then lay the irrigation system. The last step is to dig up the soil for the lawn. Dig the soil to the depth of a spade and then turn it over. You can use a rotavator to dig up the lawn, which will speed up the work.
Before sowing grass, check the soil type and improve the quality if necessary. Grass grows best when the acidity of the soil is between pH 5.5 and 7.0. Then you need to level the soil for the lawn. Apply a lawn fertilizer about a week before seeding.
The timing of grass seeding depends on whether the grass will be hand seeded or a roll lawn. If the grass will be seeded by hand, there are two dates you can do it. The first is in April or May when the air temperature rises to about 10 degrees. The second date for seeding the grass is late August to mid-September when it is warm and not hot and the soil is moist. You can also sow grass in late spring and summer, but it must then be watered and fertilized regularly.

A lawn on the roller can be laid from early spring to late autumn. High quality turf is resistant to low temperatures, so it can be laid even in October.
